The results of five state assembly elections announced on Tuesday have huge repercussions for India's national politics. Of the 37 places up for grabs, 26 have been taken by independent candidates, it has been announced.
If all trends at this late stage of counting will turn into results, the Samajwadi Party, with 221 seats, will have the happy statistic of having delivered the best performance in UP in two decades.The two states were a crucible for Rahul Gandhi's experiments to regenerate the party organisation.
